Understanding the Difference Between Blind and Assisted Transfers

In unified communication systems, transferring calls efficiently is crucial for smooth communication. Two common methods of transferring calls are Blind Transfers and Assisted Transfers (also known as Attended Transfers). Understanding these methods will help you use your phone system effectively.

1. Blind Transfer

A Blind Transfer occurs when a caller is transferred to another party without the transferring party first speaking with the recipient.

  • How It Works:

    • The caller presses the Transfer button on their phone.
    • They then dial the recipient's extension or external number.
    • Select the "B Transfer" option
    • The call is transferred immediately, and the original caller is disconnected.
  • When to Use:

    • When you are confident the recipient will take the call.
    • When you want to transfer the call without needing to inform the recipient about the incoming call.
  • Advantages:

    • Quick and efficient for transferring calls without delay.
    • Reduces hold time for the caller.

2. Assisted Transfer (Attended Transfer)

An Assisted Transfer allows the transferring party to speak with the recipient before transferring the caller.

  • How It Works:

    • The caller presses the Transfer button, placing the original call on hold.
    • They dial the recipient's extension or external number and wait for the recipient to answer.
    • Once connected, the transferring party can consult with the recipient about the call before completing the transfer.
    • The transferring party presses the Transfer button again to connect the caller to the recipient.
  • When to Use:

    • When you need to provide context or information to the recipient about the caller.
    • When the recipient might not expect the call or may require preparation to take it.
  • Advantages:

    • Ensures the recipient is informed about the call and can prepare accordingly.
    • Reduces the chances of dropped calls or miscommunication.
