At Vantact, we often get asked by clients how to register their business phone number with WhatsApp Business. While the process may seem simple, there are some important technical limitations to be aware of, especially if your number is not tied to a mobile phone.
Why SMS Registration Doesn’t Work
WhatsApp has strict security measures in place. As per WhatsApp’s official FAQ, SMS messages for verification are only sent to numbers that are registered on mobile phones.
This means:
-
If your business number is a VoIP number, landline, or hosted on a cloud PBX, SMS verification will likely fail.
-
This is by design and helps prevent abuse of their platform.
Phone Call Verification – It Can Work (With a Catch)
WhatsApp does offer an alternative: Phone call verification. This means their system will call your number and read the six-digit verification code out loud. However, this method has a technical limitation:
The call must ring directly to an extension that answers.
If your number is set up to go through:
-
An auto-attendant (IVR),
-
A voicemail greeting, or
-
A call queue,
…the call will fail, and you won’t receive the verification code.
How Vantact Can Help
If you're a Vantact client and want to register your business number with WhatsApp Business, we can help streamline the process:
-
Reach out to our support team.
-
We'll temporarily route your business number directly to a designated extension.
-
You can then request the phone call verification through WhatsApp.
-
Once verified, we can restore your original call routing (IVR, call queue, etc.).
This small adjustment helps ensure your number is registered successfully without making permanent changes to your setup.
